I think the candlesticks are designed so that you can leave a candle burning, and then it self extinguishes – like a night light. And one of them looks like a printing/embossing contraption, and another (the one with the candle snuffer) is a seal, it’s just larger than usually seen. It would have been used for official documents
Thanks so much for piquing my interest with these items! 🥰 I knew the answer to the sand containers: sand was used to “blot” or dry ink on parchment written with quills (often seen on old movies). It was spread across the page then poured or gently blown off.
Google image search was most helpful with some of the others: indeed an ancient calculator and adjustable candlesticks: the German description of these was “nachtlicht” (nightlight) so maybe they still stayed lit even if adjusted right down into the brass cylinder.
