Uses for old records

I have never seen this use for an LP record before, though I have seen them made into clocks and bookends.

My father used to melt brittle old 78 records (made of shellac I believe) to finish wooden furniture. He used to crush them up and put them in a glass pot with isopropyl alcohol. The bits dissolved into a paint-like liquid, which he brushed onto our dining room set. The dining suite looked gorgeous afterwards. If I remember correctly it was a velvety inky black.

  1. I have seen old 7″ singles turned into ash trays (the middle hole was closed while the plastic was melting) but never an ornament made from a 12″ album. I didn’t know shellac (10″ 78 rpm records) were meltable, so thank you for my lesson for the day Janet.
