The Sanatorium, The Retreat, The Wilds by Sarah Pearse

I bought The Wilds at a charity shop first and was really getting into it when I realised that it was the third in a trilogy, so I bought the other two new and read them in order.

Wow! I had the worst book hangover when I finished the last one. I wished there were more so I could keep reading.

I have not enjoyed books this much in a long time. They are kind of reminiscent of Jane Harper’s books featuring Aaron Falk. Easy to read but not simple and you don’t see the end coming. The descriptions of the natural surroundings are amazing. I can definitely recommend!

All three books were set during the covid years, but the pandemic is not mentioned at all, despite at least the first book being written during the pandemic. If you had not lived through covid, it probably would not matter, though it is strange how those years are imprinted on those of us who did. For me, 2020 will always be a year of restrictions.

Michael Connelly did receive some criticism for featuring covid in his books. Readers said they wanted to escape into his books during covid, not read about the pandemic even in novels. I wonder how we will look back at it in books and television series decades from now? Some television series featured covid, some didn’t. I do find the ones where the characters masks a bit annoying, though I guess it is probably the only way they could film during those years.

  1. Thanks so much for the heads up on these books! Love receiving author and/or book recommendations from passionate readers. I’ve been feeling atypically directionless while trying to decide what to read next so the timing couldn’t be better. It’s a bit unnerving without a book in hand, laying on a nearby chair or tucked in a tote. I’m going to browse your site for other book recommendations before shopping. Sending a virtual hug – you’ve made my day. 💖

    1. If you like crime/thriller novels, these are really good. I have also just read an Ann Cleeves Vera book, and a Lucinda Riley one. Though Sarah Pearse blew them all out of the water. I could not put them down. At the moment I am reading End of Story by A.J Finn but I am battling to get into it after the Pearse ones. Another series I really enjoyed was The Dry series by Jane Harper. I know that lost feeling when you have nothing you really want to read.

  2. This is really interesting regarding Covid. I love medical dramas on TV so Covid was all around. They had really fancy masks that had plastic windows so you could see the lips moving (this was actually quite shocking for me, not being able to read people’s lips. I don’t have any hearing problems, but reading lips was important to me). I haven’t come across any books that were including Covid in their story lines. I’m not quite sure how I would react if I saw this.

I’m going to start making a list of the books you read because they sound really good. At the moment, I’m stuck with sci-fi books. I read The Martian (and watched the movie countless times) and I read the other books by Andy Weir and now I came across another trilogy of sci-fi books by Sylvain Neuvel called The Themis Files. Really mind-blowing!
