Fotografiska, Stockholm

I have always wanted to go to Stockholm’s Fotografiska museum. It became instantly famous, and then spread to other countries. I pass it every day on the way to work. I was never sure why I had not been before. Maybe it is, in a strange way, because of Athelé.

I knew Ath’s brother Ken. He was a brilliant photojournalist and named South Africa’s Press Photographer of the Year several times. He was the chief photographer at The Star, where I worked several times a year training their staff on the budding internet. I always marvelled how he went where most people would not dare.

Ken was shot and killed days before the first democratic election in South Africa while covering clashes in Thokoza township. His death was shocking, and was later covered in the book and movie Bang Bang Club.

Ath came to visit family in Stockholm and we decided to go to Fotografiska in honour of Ken.

We had coffee and cake in the stunning restaurant. The views are incredible. There are several concepts within the large restaurant floor so you can have everything from a drink to cake to a full meal. All vegetables in the restaurant are grown hydroponically in the building, and visitors can look at the area where they are grown.
