Up until a year ago, I had never suffered from allergies. I have been lucky in all respects to have had a strong immune system. This year, however, I have been miserable. I have tried so many allergy medications, but nothing has helped. Allegra is the only one I have not tried so I bought it yesterday. Lidl had my favourite tissues in stock (these are THE BEST) and in giant packs.

These are all the others I have tried. Not pictured is Nasonex steroid nose spray. I hope the Allegra works. I am a newbie to allergies, so any tips would be appreciated

I went to an indoor market which had some interesting items. I hope they do well enough that they stay because it is a great initiative.

I loved these. I bought a little whale to hang on my handbag. At the bottom of the display are mini dinosaurs which were gorgeous (I loved the purple one) but too big to hang on my bag.

And not in the shop but by the same maker, a little hedgehog

In Sweden, you can only buy alcohol at the state-owned alcohol monopoly, Systembolaget. So there are no wine or beer sales in supermarkets etc. The plus side of this is that the people who work there are very knowledgeable, and the selection is good. I hardly ever go in to Systembolaget because my husband does not drink alcohol and I drink maybe two or three times a year. This South African wine caught my eye though!

I just sent you a long and torturous email about my own struggle with allergies. After reading some of the comments, I realize I forgot to mention that nasal rinses are incredibly useful for both allergies and sinus infections (I get both too!…). I have to say that Cetirizine, while very effective, ended up giving me a bleeding nose. My husband also had the same experience. But like someone else said, loratadine is very effective although it needs to build up in your system for it to be truly effective. Good luck! It’s not fun at all!…
I started suffering from hay fever in 1974 (the year my daughter was born) and it was terrible for around 15 years but then suddenly stopped. I hope you manage to find something that works for you and that it also stops as suddenly as it started.
Those charms look amazing too, I can see why you were attracted to them as the whale looks amazing.
If you’ve suddenly begun to react to something it might be a product rather than pollen (or it might be a new tree in the neighborhood) I’ve had an unusually good year so far as May’s been unseasonably dry here. My tips from 50 years of hefty hay fever are; wash inside nose when you wash your face, add a tiny bit of moisturiser inside nostrils (then pollen etc will stick there, rather than get absorbed) and reapply after blowing your nose. Note what is in flower in your diary, what product you are using and then you can be prepared for travelling or next year. I’m sensitive to quite a lot of products; enough to be irritated but not so bad that it’s much more than an inconvenience, thankfully. Good luck.
Thank you so much for your tips. I was completely unprepared for the tiredness and the streaming nose/itchy eyes. I already have chronic sinusitis that flares up when the air pressure changes or I have a cold so this has been quite debilitating for several months now. Everyone has said you just need to find the antihistamine that works. So many of my clients are also suffering at the moment so it must be quite a hefty spring pollen-wise. I am affected whether I am inside (where we have three cats) and outside (all the pollen) so I am not sure what is setting me off this year.
My pleasure. Also worth noting that I find loratadine ( the antihistamine I find most effective ) needs to build up a bit in my system. My GP also told me that it was fine for me to take up to 5 tablets daily if I didn’t do so for the whole season. Perhaps discuss the dosage with your GP
That’s good to know!
Hi Janet,
I have Allergic Rhinitis which is like all year round hay fever. I’m also allergic to the liquid that carries the drug in the sinus sprays 🙄The only thing that works for me is Certirizine tablets. Hope they can help you.
Ooh thank you for this. The doctor that prescribed me the one medicine said I could have allergic rhinitis. I did notice that when we were in South Africa, I did not suffer at all. I am not sure I even used one pack of tissues in three and a half weeks. Here I go through about two a day. I am also affected by changing air pressure. When a storm is brewing my sinusitis flares up something awful. I get headaches that will not go away. I tried migraine medicine in case it was that, but nothing.
