Flour sack clothing

I am not sure if it is still common in other countries, but in South Africa many people still wear floursack clothing. It’s probably not something I would wear in Sweden but when it is hot and you spend a lot of time on the beach and in the sun, these garments are perfect.

Many years ago I had a pink flour sack dress and a pair of white drawstring trousers. They wash beautifully and become really soft and thin when they are well-used. These items are also really nice and cool in hot weather. I used to wear them in the height of summer when I was on holiday and spending a lot of time on the beach. The ones I had were made from actual flour sacks, but I am not sure that flour comes in these sacks anymore, so the newer items are probably not made from actual bags.

My husband has a pair of flour bag shorts. It had been 46°C/115°F the day this photograph was taken. I wanted to get a pair of very pale pink long trousers on our last trip to South Africa so I could keep cool, but it was January (mid-summer) so almost everything was sold out.
