Differences between crocodiles and alligators

Alligators

  • dark colored
  • broad, rounded snout
  • usually found in fresh water
  • the fourth tooth on either side of the lower jaw fits into an internal socket in the upper jaw so that these teeth are hidden when the mouth is closed
  • lifespan is 30-50 years
  • 8 species
  • average 500 pounds/226kg

Crocodiles

  • grayish-green
  • narrow, tapered, triangular snout
  • prefer coastal, brackish and salt-water habitats.
  • the fourth tooth on either side of the lower jaw is always exposed.
  • typically more aggressive than alligators
  • lifespan 70 – 100 years
  • 15 species
  • average 1000 pounds/453kg with sizes up to 2200 punds/1000kg
