At the moment it costs me $30 for a Stockholm monthly travel card. For that, I have unlimited travel on underground, tram, light rail, commuter train, and commuter boat within Stockholm County. There are also free boats in many places in the county – across the canal for us, between islands in the archipelago, and from the centre of Stockholm to a peninsula on the other side.
We often take smalish road ferries between the islands in the Stockholm archipelago. These ferries fall within the remit of the Swedish Transport Administration and run on green diesel. They are free of charge, take a few minutes to cross, and run regularly. Most passengers are in cars, but these ferries also take bicycles, motorbikes, pedestrians, trucks and buses. Engines must be switched off and some people get out of their vehicles during the journey.
We usually take Fragrancia from Värmdö to Rindö, and Nina from Rindö to Vaxholm
The bigger road ferries can take heavy trucks, up to 80 cars and 300 passengers, and are hybrid-electric.
My husband and I were discussing what would happen if the ferry sank. Would the cars would go down like stones? We decided that stretches are so short (one of ours is only 970 metres) that the likelihood of sinking must be very very small. And they must have a plan.
Then we saw this and chuckled. It is probably for maintenance work but given our discussion it seemed rather ironic
