Interesting ring

The ring below fascinated me. I wonder if it would leave marks on your finger? Or be scratchy?

I think that for so many people, how expensive your ring is, is more important than anything else. This probably comes from earlier De Beer diamond campaigns where people were told that your partner should spend 3 full months’ salary on your engagement ring. That is a real pity I think. Just choose what you want and never mind what other people or society tells you. These rings are just the opposite – the bling is where no one will ever see it. Not even you. But the question then is, if even you can’t see it, what is the point?

  1. Indeed! What is the point!
Do you know where the “your engagement ring must be 3 full months’ salary come from? De Beer reused that tradition but is comes from the mid 19th century when women who became widows had to sell their engagement ring to ensure a living for a while (women didn’t work at the time). That’s why the ring had to have a certain value.
However when a marriage split women had to give their engagement ring back to their husband (they still do it today) as it would have been unfair for them to sell the ring and spend the money.
It’s all a matter of tradition and some are still on today.

  2. I totally agree with you – what is the point?

Maybe these types of rings are examples of reverse snobbery?
