Carl Hiaasen Skinny Dip and Filofaxes

I found this reference to Filofaxes in Skinny Dip, written in 2004. I was wondering if, at that point, Filofax was a generic term used to refer to any ring-bound planner?

I have read Hiaasen on and off over the years, when I stumble across them in charity stores. He is very funny.

  1. It’s been a generic term here in the UK for a very long time, like hoover for vacuum cleaner is. Certainly since 1992 when I was given mine as a leaving gift from work

  2. Love it when I spy a planner in books or films. I don’t think it was a generic term. Franklin Planner and Daytimer was probably better known back then. At A Glance for spiral planners. Daytimer was sold at the big box office supply stores and still is as well as Target. Franklin Planner had its own brick and mortar stores throughout the US. The big 6 CPA firm I worked for in the 90s used to provide Franklin planners and send us to the training to all new supervisors. I remember I really wanted a Filofax back then but it was not possible as it was too hard to get pre internet shopping days. I had seen a coworker from the UK with one and loved how much more compact it was.
