View from our front gate

This is not a big boat, but sometimes there are container ships in the canal outside our apartment and they look rather disconcerting. From a distance it looks like they are in our garden.

The gate is about 8 metres from the working canal that connects the Baltic Sea (to the left) and huge Lake Mälaren (to the right) by means of a lock. The giant lake allows goods to be delivered ‘inland’ to many different cities.

A similar thing happened the last time I was in the Netherlands to visit Van Der Spek. This was a giant cruise ship next to where we were going for dinner

  1. What a view! You seem to be really nicely located with superb views and still very central. It seems insane to know that cargo ships pass by. I wouldn’t have thought that they would seeing as they are so huge. I once had a student who used to pilot (is it the right verb?) a cargo ship and he used to tell us so many interesting stories. I used to love to hear him talk about the state of the seas he was on and the weather he encountered. Can you imagine doing a job like this?…

    1. The big boats sometimes have just over a metre clearance on each side of the lock. The bridge over the canal often needs to be opened for the tall ones. So they need to really know their measurements I guess!

      1. I hate parallel parking. I am not good at it so I not sure how I ever passed my driver’s licence. I seem to remember that I nailed parallel parking that day, though. And now cars help you do it so it is not so bad.
