Miniature dictionaries

I found this tiny English dictionary at a thrift store recently. The photos do not show how glossy and gold it is. It has a tiny metal clasp and hangs on a chain, together with a teeny magnifying glass. The magnifying glass is pretty strong because you can read the dictionary quite easily if you use it.

It is smaller than a matchbox

I also have two other miniature dictionaries (to the right in the photograph below). One Swedish-English dictionary given to me by a student, and one German-English which belonged to my grandfather. To the left of the photograph are three miniature bibles, which live in my printer’s tray.

I wonder what the purpose of these tiny books were. Advertising? Ornamentation? Novelties? They are legible but you need a magnifying glass for them. I imagine larger pocket dictionaries and bibles would have been easier to read but still portable.

I looked up small dictionaries and found this one
