My Classics: Jewellery

Over the years I have built up a small selection of 18K gold jewellery

  • long heavy gold chain
  • matching chain bracelet
  • lighter gold chain
  • gold chain with ruby
  • six gold rings in different designs, some with stones
  • diamond and gold ear studs (not shown)
  • a white gold, diamond and ruby necklace and ring

I wear the above jewellery day in and day out for work. I have bought all of these items at pawnshops or on estate auctions so they cost just the gold value. Their value has increased over time so they were a good investment.

I also have the same in sterling silver – several chains, a bangle that belonged to my mother, and some rings. I used to wear silver jewellery all the time but in my thirties I started preferring yellow gold jewellery. It looks better as it wears and develops that glowing patina. I tend to wear silver more in summer when I have a bit of a tan.

I do buy cheaper costume jewellery sometimes but I give it away or sell it once I have tired of it. I sold most of my costume or trend-led jewellery over time, preferring in recent years to stick to simple classic jewellery. I think I was heading that way before Covid hit, but that certainly cemented it for me.
