HOTD #28 – Fjällräven Kånken

This is a backpack regarded very fondly by the Swedish people. Swedes usually had a Fjällräven Kånken as children and so these backpacks have a nostalgic aura about them. They are also practical, hardwearing, come in many colourways, styles and sizes. You can just bung them in the washing machine and the older they get the better they look.  There is nothing as beautiful as a well-worn Kånken. They are practical for everyone from kids to grannies. They are surprisingly trendy considering that everyone seems to have one. I have a khaki one with maroon straps. They are extremely light and fold up small so when you are travelling you can put them in a suitcase to use for daytrips out or for carrying extra stuff on the way home. Some models like mine, above, have carrying handles as well. There are also models with leather carrying handles, and a special edition Save the Arctic Fox Kånken in pure white. That one is my absolute favourite.

They are also inexpensive. I tend to tire of something when it is ubiquitous. But every Kånken I see puts a smile on my face. This is one item where I can say with no doubt whatsoever….’buy one. You won’t be sorry!’

They are fairly easily available for purchase online no matter where you live. So if you do a search you will be able to pinpoint a stockist closest to your area. When I was in London recently they were named the coolest bag in town and I saw them for sale in many different fashion and sports stores.

Available everywhere in every colour possible – just search for Fjällräven Kånken. If you don’t have the Swedish keys on your keyboard just cut and paste the underlined bit above.

  1. I was going through all your articles about the Kanken backpack. I have a 16l one and I am very tempted to get a mini. Have you got any experiences with it? I know you wrote about the sling one but that one might be too small… I always need to pack a bottle of water with me, even in my handbag!… The mini seem to be mostly for kids but they are so cute…

    1. The mini ones are really really cute. Being a small backpack though, I am not sure how they would look on an adult. Small backpacks for adults were quite popular a number of years ago so I am sure it could work. The sling one is amazing.

      1. Yes, I hadn’t thought about how it would look on a non-toddler… I’m not very tall at all (I’m only 1.59m), so it *could* work. Maybe I need to investigate the sling ones… Thank you so much for your feedback!
