Jewellery boxes

I went through my jewellery boxes the other day, polishing things that needed it and taking out things from the back that I had not worn in a while. I always put them on the bed and love scratching through them. I tend to go through a period of wearing the same ‘set’ of jewellery until I get tired of it. I wear gold in winter and silver in summer.

I sell pieces of jewellery that I am tired of or that are no longer my style. I then use the money to buy new pieces. I sold over 100 pieces last year, mainly silver.

From left to right

  • an amazing leather jewellery box with a key, which holds my real gold jewellery. It has a gorgeous embossed leather tray inside and velvet lining. I found it for $15 at a charity shop
  • a blingy small box for my moissanite and lab diamond and sterling silver jewellery
  • red leather jewellery box lined in cream velvet, which holds any non-gold jewellery that has precious stones in it. I have sterling silver and tanzanites, emeralds, garnets, peridot and onyx. I also have my gold watch in here because it does not fit in the small one. This was $6 at a charity shop
  • sterling silver jewellery
  • newer costume jewellery
  • sentimental jewellery that I do not use

The only one that is full is the one with my sterling silver jewellery.

  1. I’m sure you know this already, but just in case – it’s worth buying some 3M ‘anti-tarnish tabs’ I get mine from a supplier on EBay – you only need a small piece to deter tarnish – they are impregnated with activated charcoal. I keep some in the jewellery I’ve got ready for sale, which makes a huge difference to the amount of polishing I need to do. I rarely have to revisit my pieces, despite having them on display at events. I keep my personal jewellery in a Stackers box and some vintage, handmade wooden boxes , with some more of the tabs.

  2. I am impressed at the quantity of jewellery boxes you have! And I’ve aways been intrigued by jewellery boxes with a key. Do some people really lock them? Why?

I only have one small jewellery box. My jewellery is safely kept at the bank and I rotate my sets every other week. My house has been broken in twice so I don’t keep any jewellery or luxury bags at home.

    1. I don’t lock any of mine because a thief could just carry them off and get into the boxes later. I have been thinking of having a small safe installed in our home, because our bank doesn’t have safety deposit boxes anymore. The home safe would have to be both hidden and fastened to something. The only jewellery that is of any value is in the tiny brown leather box.
