Phobias

A nice list of phobias here

and an article on how phobias are named from http://phobialist.com

The word phobia is Greek, therefore any word that is connected to it should be Greek. To coin a new phobia name, it is proper to follow this rule. The rule has been broken many times in the past especially within the medical profession which is steeped in Latin and often, when forming a name for a phobia, they have dipped into what they know and have used a Latin suppletion affixed to the Greek stem to form their names.

Open War in the Office Arena

It’s hardly surprising that given man’s experience in wartime, there are so many words and phrases used in the business world that relate to war:

Hostile takeover: an unsolicited corporate takeover, not supported by the existing management and board of directors of the company being targeted.

Golden parachute: A clause in an executive employment contract that provides the executive with a lucrative severance package in the even of termination.

Poison pill: a device designed to prevent a hostile takeover by increasing the takeover cost, usually through the issuance of new preferred shares that carry severe redemption provisions.

Ambush or guerilla marketing: To tie a firm’s name to its competitors’ advertising.

Arrows to fire: Points to mention and/or tactics to take.

Hired gun: A consultant with expertise who may have better knowledge than almost any employee. Usually brought in to make large stuff reductions.

Question for my readers about recipes

My mother was a fantastic cook. I never learned to cook but I asked her write all her recipes down just before she died. As time went along I collected recipes for dishes I liked. My old battered recipe book is about 30 years old now and tattered, battered and splattered from much use by family and friends.

If anyone here loves trying new recipes and would be interested, I could put one a day up here for others to try. Pop a line in the comments or click like and if interest is there I will go for it!

Edited to add: two comments already (thanks guys!). If I get another two in favour I will start posting recipes by Monday, promise!

Scones

4622_MEDIUM

The word scone derives from sgonn, which is Gaelic for ‘a large mouthful. Made from fine white flour, sour milk (or buttermilk), and a raising agent, scones are baked on a griddle or in the oven. Originating in Scotland in the early 1500s, they started off as cakes cut into four to make square or triangular portions. Now they are generally round and baked individually. In Victorian times they were an essential part of afternoon tea, served with jam and clotted cream – hence the name ‘cream tea’. These days, Sainsbury’s sells over 4 million scones a year.
