Sometimes when we are out on rides in the vicinity of Stockholm’s Arlanda airport, we stop at the viewing point to watch planes landing and taking off. The planes swoop right over you when you are on the highway, and some of them cross a bridge next to cars on the highway to get to their stops.
We were there for about twenty minutes, and at least 7 planes flew past the viewing station to land.
I know people say the internet revolutionised the world in a way never seen before, but I have always thought that aviation had way more impact. From the Wright brothers’ first flight in 1903 to breaking the sound barrier in 1947, to landing on the moon in 1969 was an incredible development. Airmail, and being able to travel quickly (and later cheaply) revolutionised the world.
As with most things people-related, we went too far in many ways, but it is still incredibly to watch these giant birds full of people take off and land. They are so beautiful and so graceful.
