The last booking we had to do for South Africa fell into place last week. I spent weekends and holidays on these beaches growing up. They are the thing I miss the most about South Africa, and where I would love my ashes to be scattered when I die.
Because Port Alfred/Kowie is such a small town in a poor province, many of the best places are known only by locals. Bookings for the best ones can be hard (no online presence, no advanced cash payment systems) but we managed it with the help of the lovely manager and my nephew. We normally stay next door but they had no options for payment from abroad. I normally pay when we are there but this time we are travelling during the busiest season so we had to book early.
Six of us will be staying for four nights at this gorgeous chalet on our last weekend in South Africa. It works our at $12 per person per night in high season. There are several beach cottages, log chalets and this chalet situated in the natural dune vegetation, with a short walk (30 metres) to the sea. They are not high luxury but they are wonderful. You can see whales and dolphins from the balcony (though it will be a bit late in the season for whales)

We are visiting two animal parks (staying in the bush) and this is our beach stay. For the rest of the time we will be staying with family and friends.
