When I read about this, I always muse about how groups who try to be unconvential often end up looking the same. But I guess that in itself provides a sense of community and belonging, because you can identify those in your own circle.
We live near a huge high school and at the beginning of the school year everyone looks more or less the same. Within a few weeks you have certain groups, recognisable by their style. Usually they fall into preppy, grunge, sporty, heavy metal or goth/emo/punk. Some do defy definition though. I have many students who used to be hard-core goths but now look pretty conventional.
