What used to be rude but now isn’t

  • not answering the phone
  • not answering the door
  • wearing a hat indoors
  • going to the shops in your pyjamas (this still baffles me)
  • talking about salaries
  • flaunting wealth
  • talking back to your elders
  • wearing casual clothes to the theatre
  • doing something else (for example, reading) while eating
  • lack of table manners
  • bringing parents to a job interview (apparently this happens quite frequently these days
  • calling older people by their first names
  • eating with your hands

I can remember someone being horrified that I did immediately and always answer the door or home phone. For me a ringing home phone was an invitation not an obligation, and that I did not have to accept if I were in the middle of doing something or on my way out. My family always used to ring twice, stop, and then ring again if they really wanted me to pick up.

  1. You used to have to answer the phone to find out who was calling, but with caller id display, and so many scammers out there, I don’t answer calls when I have no idea who it is who is calling me.
