A new Swedish law came into effect on December 18th, 2024 making it mandatory to separate food waste. All Sweden’s municipalities are required to provide separate collection of food waste. This has been done for years in many parts of the country but it has not been mandatory before now.

The collected waste will be used to generate biogas and organic fertiliser. Apparently, one year’s worth of collected food from 3000 people will be enough to run one bus or five bin lorries for one year.
