20 Tips

  1. Sand sticks to your skin because your skin is naturally slightly oily. If you soak up that oil, the sand brushes right off, so take baby powder or cornstarch to the beach and dust some onto yourself when you’re ready to leave. The sand will fall right off with the lightest touch.
  2. To get shards of eggshell out of the raw eggs in a bowl, scoop them up with a larger piece of the eggshell- they are attracted to each other.
  3. To clean up vomit (or egg or anything slimy/gross), sprinkle coffee grounds, salt, or sugar on it. It will clump and sweep up easier. If on hard floors, the coffee grounds work best for vomit because it disguises the odor and visuals which helps to avoid the gag reflex.
  4. If you spill nail polish on a hard surface, pouring sugar (or salt!) on it makes it MUCH easier to clean up!
  5. f you cut the end of cucumber off and rub the cut edges together it “Burps” the cucumber so you don’t burp the taste for hours after eating it. It also takes out bitterness.
  6. If you get a splinter (wood, glass, metal shaving…) instead of using tweezers just put a dab of Vicks Vapor Rub and a bandaid over it. By the next morning the splinter will be laying in the bandage.
  7. If something you made ( soup, sauce, stew etc) is too salty put a potato in it. It absorbs the salt and doesn’t change the recipe.
  8. Use a lint roller to clean up spilled glitter
  9. f you accidentally use a permanent marker on a white board you can scribble over the top of it with a regular white board marker and it’ll rub off. You can also remove nail polish in an emergency by putting another coat on and quickly wiping it off. The old coat will come off too
  10. When you need to figure out a percent, try swapping the numbers, sometimes it’s easier to figure – for example 40% of 50 is the same as 50% of 40, but one is much quicker and easier to find the answer to.
  11. To get the smell off your hands after chopping an onion, rub your fingers back and forth on something stainless steel, like the kitchen faucet.
  12. Shaving cream, removes lipstick out of almost everything
  13. If you break glass after you sweep it up, put pieces of bread (broken up on the ground) then sweep it all up again and it will pick up the flat shards and any extra small ones. Bread is like a sponge and it’s so soft that when it moves over the glass grabs it all. .
  14. If you’re making marinara or any tomato based sauce and it’s a bit too acidic, don’t add sugar, add a little bicarbonate of soda. No measurements, start with half a teaspoon, taste and adjust.
  15. You can copy text from a picture. So if you ever need to enter a long number or code like an IP address just take a picture of it and copy and paste it.
  16. If you’re not sure your eggs are still okay to eat, pour a glass of water and put one of the eggs in it. If it sinks, they’re still okay to eat. If it floats, they’re spoiled. The gasses inside from the spoilage make the egg float.
  17. When you’re carrying a full dish of liquid(beverage, bowl of soup etc), don’t look at it while you walk, look straight ahead. You’re more likely to spill it while you watching it
  18. If you have tons of cat hair/dog hair in the carpet/sofa/etc put on (clean!) rubber gloves you’d use for cleaning and just wipe it off wtih your hands. It comes right out!
  19. Band-aid residue? Put shaving cream on the little adhesive stickies that are stuck to your skin and it’ll come right off. Shaving cream is made to lift the hair up off the surface of the skin for an easier shave and just so happens to help lift other things up off your skin.
  20. to get streak-free windows to use a minimal amount of window cleaner and use newspapers to wipe

  1. These are incredible… Thank you for sharing them. Another tip for the vomit (#3) is to use kitty litter. This works really well too and I know this from experience!… Having a child and a cat can be a wonderful combination!…

  2. Wow, a lot of these I used to consider old wives tales. Just like the old women sharing them they actually do work though. Thank you Janet.
