Like most traditions, the origins may be cloudy and there are other theories, but that seems to be the main one.

My mother always used to say that gold has value everywhere, and that I should always have some gold that I could sell in an emergency, no matter where I am. I have one heavy gold chain that has steadily increased in value over the years (particularly in times of crisis – that price of jumped in the days after Russia invaded Ukraine) but I have never thought of selling it. Partly because I could never afford to buy another one, but also because my mother’s words echo in my head.
