When I grew up, Christmas things appeared in the shops from 1 December, and the Christmas sales were between Christmas and New Year. Christmas songs were in the shops from 1 December to 24 December. That way you could really get into the spirit of things.
Nowadays though, things have accelerated so fast that I saw the first Advent Calendar (a beauty one) at the end of August. Halfway through September, shops were full of them. Last week – the last week in September – Christmas candy and drinks appeared in our shops. By the Hallowe’en things appear in the shops, I am going to be heartily sick of Christmas. I predict the Christmas sales will start in the middle of November and last until Easter.
Stop the world, I wanna get off!
In the U.S., the Christmas season used to start the day after Thanksgiving (the 4th Thursday in November). This year, I saw a Christmas commercial on September 30!
We usually at least have Hallowe’en first but this year they started early!
Christmas should not be allowed to start earlier and earlier every year. We should celebrate Hallowe’en and the thinnest veil between this world and the next, our universe and the multiverse before Christmas raises it’s head to cheer everyone up. In that we agree December is when Christmas should begin, the cold needs some cheering up and those of us who hate the cold weather can begin to look forward again to the time when we can see more daylight and warmer days approaching.
