Most beautiful words in the English language

One of my students asked me recently about my favourite words in the English language.

Some sprang to mind immediately – home, hope, mother, peace – perhaps because of their meaning

Others came to me over the following hours – serendipity, mellifluous, discombobulated, nincompoop, languor, incandescence, crepuscular, epiphany,

I decided to see which others are regarded as beautiful. There are many lists and some of the words surprised me. But these I liked

  • ephemeral
  • propinquity
  • angst
  • sumptuous
  • nadir
  • scintilla
  • euphoria
  • cherish
  • elixir
  • solitude
  • quintessential
  • nemesis
  • lithe
  • effervescent
  • panacea
  • tranquility
  • somnambulist
  • iridescent
  • luminescence
