  • a chart and a map is that a map measures land and a chart measures water
  • a palace and a castle is that a palace is built for show (usually wealth and power) and a castle is built for defence.
  • cement and concrete is that cement is an ingredient of concrete
  • abbreviation and acronym is that an acronym is an abbreviation that can be said as a word (eg NATO)

  1. Thanks Janet. I wish I had something like that when I was teaching. The abbreviation / acronym always drove me crazy. I used to explain it to all my classes and one day a student asked if we could call the United Nations the UN? Then we had to go to the exception of the rule explanation. The student’s response was “cool”. I loved teaching.
