Would you rather fly First Class or spend the money on your holiday?

When I travel home to see my family it is a 30 hour trip door to door. I couldn’t afford first class and usually just fly cattle class a.k.a economy. But even if I could afford it I am sure that I would rather endure the discomfort and splash out on a fancy hotel or pricey restaurants instead. What do you think?

Even the nice vanity bags aren’t an incentive. I am given quite a few by friends who travel a lot and know my love of toiletries, and when I fly long haul I have to pass through Business Class to disembark at destination. The cabin crew let me take one or two of the Business Class vanity bags that are left behind on seats, unopened. I have to admit the US Delta Airlines Tumi Business Class set is wonderful. I have two or three of those and the little bags are the best! Photo at the very bottom of the article.

  1. My longest flight has only been four hours, so I don’t really know what it is like to have a really long flight!
If I had the money, I’d go for it. If it meant scrimping on the actual holiday though, I’d definitely prefer to go economy and spend more on hotels/food once there!

  2. Hi Janet. My husband and I have a timeshare in Aruba. We live in CT, USA. On a few occasions, we were able to upgrade to First Class with frequent flyer miles and we never received any type of cute little bag like you showed in your posting. We flew American Airlines or US Air. I think that the only thing we got free was a set of ear phones and the use of a blanket. There was food but it wasn’t that great. By the way, your blog intrigues me. My father was Swedish. He was actually born in the USA but his parents and several of his siblings were born in Sweden. I have never been to Sweden but would love to see it someday.

  3. Goodness 30 hours door to door would take me from Sydney via Emirates to Scotland and then to the door of the family in Glasgow and I would still have a couple of hours to spare

  4. I saw this link these days… it is in Portuguese but you can see the pics.. it is the small bags for Air France (Givenchy) and Singapore Airlines (Ferragamo)..

I had to laugh when you said “cattle class”… so funny.

But answering your question, as I can’t afford both, I prefer to spend the money vacationing than in the ticket, no doubt about it. My trip door to door to see my family is similar, it would be around 25 hours…

  5. Well, now this depends entirely on where I’m flying (I.e. Hours in transit) and why. If I have to go and work in China or Japan I hope work will upgrade me to business class at least, but as I rarely spend more than 2-3 hours on a plane I’ll stick with cattle class and spoil myself with a couple of nice dinners instead 🙂
