The photograph above went viral last week. It was taken three years in the Swedish department store, Åhléns by Rebecka Silverkroon, who posted it to her blog. Somehow it found itself on Facebook group Women’s Rights News last week with the caption ‘store mannequins in Sweden’. By the end of the day it had 50 000 likes, 15 000 shares and 3 000 comments.
However, that caption is not the truth. Yes, Åhléns did start with bigger mannequins a few years ago. They are still there as far as I know. But at the same time Gina Tricot, a fashion chain for young women has mannequins that look like this. Unfortunately those are still far more prevalent in Sweden today. Maybe not as drastic but still very worrying.
