Nzou the buffalant

Nzou is a female African elephant living at the Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservation park in Zimbabwe. She identifies as, and leads, a herd of Cape buffalo. Often referred to as a “buffalant,” she is a unique example of interspecies adoption and behavioural adaptation.

Nzou is almost 60 years old and has been at the park since she was two year old. The park has tried to integrate her with her own species but it has not worked. Over 40 years, Nzou has killed 14 male buffalo who challenged her leadership.
