House Quarters, Kenon-on-Sea

This was our last stop before returning to family and spending cherished time with ill family members.

I wanted one last night by the beaches and sea of the Eastern Cape. It is what I miss most of all about South Africa (besides my family of course) – those white, deserted beaches and the soothing sound of the waves. I grew up on these beaches, spent weekends and holidays baking in the sun and swimming (before I developed my fear of sharks). They are so deep in me and so typical of the area. I guess to many people, the whole of South Africa’s Eastern Cape is very samey. ‘You’ve seen on beach, you’ve seen them all), but to me I cannot get enough.

This was my last visit to the sea, and as I walked away, I almost burst into tears.

The choice of accommodation was a bit of a wild card but boy it was fantastic. There is an interior design and lifestyle shop I have always enjoyed visiting, called The House Shop. They sell the most beautiful clothing, housewares and jewellery.

This company also does interior design (The House Planner). They have a lovely cafe (The House Kitchen), bar (The House Cellar), spa (The House Spa). I recently discovered that they have a restaurant (The Quarter Deck) and accommodation (The House Quarters). Where we stayed, the quarters were called The PentHouse, ManorHouse, TownHouse and BeachHouse. They also have GuardHouse, GateHouse and WareHouse.

The entrance from the car park is rather unprepossessing. Until you get inside…my jaw literally dropped when I saw it

The beach at Kenton-on-Sea is magnificent

This was an amazing tree we saw in nearby Bushman’s River. The long branches were less than 1 metre from the ground. I could not believe they were still growing and strong.  I think it is a wild fig tree but I am not sure.

  1. I have seen trees looking similar to this one (low branches) in Northern Africa and the med. Seems to be caused by the strong winds and the trees continue to live and flourish. I love the pictures, especially that bathroom and the bath looks amazing. I think that stumbling across places can really open our eyes to possibilities and when they look amazing (like this one does) they linger in the memory.
