British Inventions

I usually hate-read the Daily Mail but now and then they do have really good articles, for example this excellent deep dive into  D-Day.

Another one I stumbled over that was interesting was this one, about British inventions/discoveries. I had no idea that Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat flap!

  1. As with much of the Heil’s reporting, it contains inaccuracies…

Newton is credited with inventing the _reflecting_ telescope; the refracting telescope was invented earlier, by the Dutch.
Aspidin invented Portland cement, but the Romans used a form of cement to create concrete (using it to the the dome of the Pantheon).
Babbage invented the Difference and Analytical engines. Ada Lovelace is considered the first _programmer_, as she developed algorithms that could be run on the Analytical Engine.
Crick & Watson didn’t _invent_ DNA. And the report misses Rosalind Franklin’s contribution to its discovery.

All easy for a journalist to research on Wikipedia…

  2. Very entertaining, did anyone know the cat flap was invented by Isaac Newton? Of course a lot of these BRITS were actually from Scotland, the English claim providence over anyone from South of the Scotland/England border, but anyone North of that divide is BRITISH.

  3. AGB was my great great grandfather, lol…the British claim him, the Scots claim him, the Canadians claim him, and the US claims him, lol.
