Aren’t they beautiful? Each person can make the designs their very own. It must be extremely relaxing and rewarding to do. Being left handed and having to write with my right hand at school, I was terrible at colouring in – could not stay in the lines. Later on I worked with technical draughting and was good at it so I am thinking of trying this. They say it is never too late to have a happy childhood!

The illustrator and designer of these works of art is Johanna Basford. She has galleries of completed work (see some of them below) on her website where you can also buy her products.

Tumble down the rabbit hole and find yourself in my inky black and white Wonderland…

I’m an illustrator and ink evangelist who prefers pens and pencils to pixels.

I create intricate, hand drawn illustrations predominately, although not exclusively, in black and white.

My creativity is cultivated by a curious imagination and a delight in the fantastic. Much of my work has roots in the flora and fauna that surrounded me growing up on my parent’s fish farm in rural Scotland.

I graduated in 2005 from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee with my degree in Printed Textiles and a portfolio stuffed with monochrome silk screen prints and drawings. Following that, I set-up my little studio and began on my mission to vanquish the vector and champion the (wobbly) hand drawn line.

Every piece I create starts life as a simple pencil sketch, evolving into a rambling pen and ink drawing usually spanning several sheets of paper. I love the tactile nature of the materials I use and the joy of smudgy fingerprints. My delicate hand inked designs intend to charm and delight, inviting you to peer closer and discover the hidden intricacies.

For me, computer generated graphics can feel cold and soulless whereas hand drawing captures a sense of energy and character which no pixel can ever replicate.

I like sugar mice, Alice in Wonderland, peonies and 0.05 Staedtler pigment liners.

  1. I do a little watercoloring by using stamp images and finally work them into greeting cards. I love to work and mix with aquarell colors of many kinds. I often or mostly use the images by Aurora Wings (also available on etsy) as digital images and print them the size I want on aquarellpaper with a gel printer so that the lines won’t bleed while coloring and it sure makes you relax and fun to use in so many projects. This way one can turn, size and resize and even combine the digi images beautifully however you want and use your favourite paper. It sure is a nice way to relax and have fun with beautiful artwork of various artists.

  2. They’re gorgeous! The French do it very well, though – their adult colouring books are on beautiful-quality paper. I brought a load back in October to see if I could de-stress using them – instead, I got all agitated when I couldn’t colour neatly!
