Port Alfred, South Africa

My brother sent me these beautiful photographs of the Port Alfred beaches, where we spent so much time growing up. We used to spend entire weekends and summers on these beaches, leaving home after breakfast and returning for dinner when it was getting dark. As teenagers we sometimes used to sit on the beach and watch the sun rise on the first day of the new year.

These are what I miss most about South Africa (apart from my family of course). Not the wildlife, not the food; just these beaches. Even when it is cloudy, it is beautiful. That sea brought me so much peace. When I die, I want a small amount of my ashes scattered on the East Beach.

In Port Alfred, the river runs through the town, and at the river mouth it divides the beaches into East Beach, and West Beach.

  1. I feel you completely. There is nothing quite like the ocean. I also want to be cremated and have my ashes scattered in the ocean. This is why we are getting closer to it and we’ll eventually move to a place near the ocean.

  2. That looks very beautiful Janet, I would give anything to be back by the sea because the winters are milder (although we still used to get 3-4 feet of snow in really bad ones those are now in the past).
