Cringeworth words

  • hubby
  • fur babies
  • littles (for kids)
  • supposably
  • irregardless

were among the words chosen [see article here]

I find myself squeamish at

  • hubs
  • wine mom
  • wine o’ clock (though sometimes it is very apt)
  • exasperated (used mistakenly instead of exacerbated)
  • of the upmost importance (instead of utmost)
  • should/would/could of (instead of have)
  • loose instead of lose
  • girl boss

I don’t mind people using phrases that I wouldn’t use myself – for example, wine mom – because that is a matter of personal preference. People using a simple word or phrase incorrectly, however, makes me sad.  I understand that it could be autocorrect, dyslexia, or not having access to good education but I cannot help thinking that in most cases it would be avoidable with more reading and better teaching. As our world becomes more visual and less textual, this will increase.
