First day of the week around the world

I have always had a work week that started on Monday and finished on Friday afternoon. From Friday evening to Sunday was the week’s end/weekend. When I was living with my family, Sunday was church day, and Catholicism considers Sunday the first day of the week. Different religions have their religious days on different days – the Jewish Sabbath is on Saturday.

I need a calendar mostly for work, so Monday to Friday is important to me.It just seems natural to start a calendar week on the first working day of the week.

Looking at this map, it surprises me how many countries have a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, start. Is this purely for religious purposes? Do official buildings, banks, etc open as normal on Sundays? Or does the week run Monday to Friday as normal, even though the calendar starts on a Sunday.

The map also seems to show that Southern Africa has a Sunday start. Not that I am aware of. I did work mostly in education and academia though, so we had Monday to Sunday calendars.

Maybe this is only a problem for me because I am very planner bound and I like the first entry to be Monday.

  1. I know the majority of inserts start on Monday but I had some with a Sunday start in the past from purchases of second hand organisers. That was for English language ones- must be to do with religious festivals/ events?

    1. It’s interesting how many countries do have a Sunday start. I come from a religious family who considered Sunday the first day of the week, but have always had Monday starts in my calendar. Saturday and Sunday are often squashed into one day’s worth of space on Northern European calendars.

  2. I was beyond shocked when I heard that other people didn’t start the week on Monday… I was baptized and I did my first communion but to me, Sunday was when we all relaxed, even God. He created the earth and then rested on Sunday (or so I was told, but I’m not a very good Catholic…).

  3. Interesting! I’m not as busy as you with scheduling appointments, so my Filofax is a week on two pages, with a Monday start. That’s how I first found your blog, when I bought my first Filofax in 2015. lol
