[Note: I have had readers telling me I am misspelling jewelry. I use British English, so I spell it jewellery]
I have several jewellery boxes at home. From left below
- smaller leather for gold
- sparkly for moissanite
- red leather for sentimental (inherited, gifted)
- black faux leather for silver
- velvet for other metals
It has taken me a long time to find boxes I like, with the correct ratio of compartments. I have loads of rings, and many jewel boxes don’t have very big ring compartments. The ones I have are mainly from vintage stores and are beautifully made. They are not full – I wish they were – but I like to give my items space so they don’t knock against each other or get tangled up.
For travel, I tend to use pillboxes because they are compact, but they are not lined so I cannot take delicate jewellery. I don’t generally like traditional travel jewellery boxes because they are more bulky, and jewellery rolls are not my thing. For trips longer than two days, I tend to take one set of silver and one set of gold jewellery – one chain, one pair of earrings, one or two rings, and a bracelet. I wear one set and put the other in the jewel box.
In my search for a travel diary, I found this beauty. It is very compact, colourful (easy to spot in a bag), has padded lining, and narrow enough that the jewellery does not roll around. I bought it immediately ($6). They had different colourways and patterns. It would not take bulky jewellery but I never travel with anything expensive or bulky.
The sticker is removable.

And my tip, in case I’ve not shared before, is to add some ‘3M anti-tarnish’ paper /tabs/strip to each box. I buy mine from Jewellery Resources on eBay, though I’m sure there’ll be an EU seller. Each 1inch square will deter tarnish for 12 months, in a space of 1 cubic metre. I buy a small quantity each year, cutting it into small pieces and keep see some in all my personal and finished DGD jewellery containers. Saves so much effort. You’ve a really nice range of boxes
Ooh thank you for that tip Dawn. I will put that on my list of things I need. They sound perfect!
They are outstanding
