Different kinds of emeralds

I had no idea there were so many types of emerald.

I love emeralds, but I have always been afraid that they were a little too fragile for me, being 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, compared to ruby and sapphire, which are 9, and diamond, which is 10. Softer stones are much better as pendants, because they take less of a hammering than a ring.
