It pays to have manners

I saw this sign outside a local coffee shop.

Translated from Swedish it says:

Manners

  • ‘a coffee’  48kr
  • ‘a coffee please’   37kr
  • ‘good morning! A coffee please’  27kr

Swedish as a language is much more direct than English. It has fewer words, no word for please, no culture of small talk or chit chat. Sometimes you can go through an entire transaction in a store without saying a single word. So this sign really tickled me. I also recently saw one on a bus encouraging people to greet the bus driver.
