What are your favourite movies?

The movies that you can watch over and over and still enjoy?

The movie I love most of all is also IMDB’s Number 1 of all time – Shawshank Redemption.

I love this movie. It is long and it is dark but I could probably watch it once a week until the end of time. I remember reluctantly dragging myself to this movie with my husband, wondering how I would manage to get through it. As I sat down I can remember thinking I should have gone for a tinkle beforehand and worrying that I would be bursting by the end. But…in the blink of an eye the movie was over, I had forgotten all about my bladder, and my popcorn was untouched.   I walked out of the cinema in a daze. Since then I have watched it countless times and enjoyed it just as much every time.

A close second is Brokeback Mountain

I watched this on a plane on the way to South Africa. The flight was 11 hours and as soon as it finished, I watched it again. I love this movie. The original short story was 11 pages long and the screenplay for the two hour movie remains true to it. It is a beautiful love story where the scenery is stunning. Annie Proulx is an amazing writer and she depicts Wyoming so beautifully. Heath Ledger’s performance was mind-blowing. I firmly believe he should have won an Oscar for it, but rumour has it that the homosexuality of the role hampered his chances and that his compensation was the posthumous Oscar he received for playing The Joker in The Dark Knight.

The next one is not a movie but a television series that never received the acclaim it should have – The Wire.

You need an interpreter to figure out the jargon in the beginning, and it didn’t receive any accolades, but I think this is the best series I have ever seen. I envy anyone who has not yet watched it. Man, I love this series.

Other movies I can watch over and over, in no particular order

  • Avatar
  • The Sound of Music
  • Master and Commander
  • Blades of Glory
  • Tropic Thunder
  • Turner and Hooch
  • Overboard
  • The Knight’s Tale
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
  • The Princess Bride

There are not many classics in there, and some of them failed at the box office, but they always make me feel good.

So do my readers have any lists to share? I would love to find some other favourites for my list.

  1. “Galaxy Quest” is an all-time-fave! If you haven’t already, I recommend the documentary about it (its creation and fanbase) “Never Surrender.” SO GOOD

    1. I love love love Galaxy Quest. When it started I thought it was going to be one of the worst movies I had ever seen. But it was so clever. The way Alan Rickman’s character wore his funny head at home by himself was hysterical. And the nerds saved the day!

  2. Princess Bride of course!
Firefly (western in space, characters which stay with you)
Miller’s Crossing (dark Irish American gangster movie, beautifully filmed).
