Harvey Ball, designer of the iconic smiley face, was paid $45 for his design and never took out a trademark on the image. He never regretted not cashing in on the success, saying “Hey, I can only eat one steak at a time, drive one car at a time.” I am not sure I could be so devoid of bitterness. But the smiley is a happy thing so maybe Mr Ball was intrinsically happy.
