My parents died before I became curious about these kinds of things, and most of my background and heritage is in Europe (UK/Ireland/Germany) so I was delighted when I discovered this!
I am mainly interested in finding out my heritage, and not finding lost family members, though that is what many people do.
I used the Swedish equivalent of this site, and just want to find out my ethnic mix. There are different tests you can order (for example a maternal line or paternal line) but I just ordered the basic one. It arrived today and now I have to take a swab from my cheek and send it back.
Will keep you posted!

Mine will probably take even longer as they have to go from the US to Sweden. I will try to be patient!

tell the sample to say hello to the 10% scandinavian ancestry I did not know I really had!

This is so exciting. I’m envious of people who live in countries that kept regular census records and can trace their lineage back in more than two generations (I love “Who do you think you are”!). DNA testing can give you at least partial answers when you don’t have such data available. I really want to do such a test one day; best of luck, I’m very happy for you!

I’ve often thought about having a go at this, although I think I know half the answer. One half of my family came from Ireland (Co. Galway and Co. Mayo) and came to England during the potato famine. The other half were industrial Midlanders and at least one was a Master Tailor. However, it’s only half the story, because where did I originate from in the very distant past? Keep us updated Janet.

My family is also from Co. Galway!

My Co. Galway family name was McGuire, and Delmore from Co. Mayo.

It’s amazing what comes back…Janet, yes you have UK/Ireland/Germany but it’s fascinating what comes back as how strong a DNA strand comes thru. My fiancé discovered he has a lot of Irish in him thru his grandmother and my son’s came back 92% European Jewish (his dad).

I did something like this a couple of years ago and I followed the mother line. I discovered that I was 95% European and that most of my DNA was Spanish! It was really interesting. Keep us posted!
