Home made eyeglasses cleaning solution

I normally buy commercially made cleansing wipes or cleansing spray. My sister uses our cousin’s DIY solution and it works brilliantly on my glasses.

  • 80% of the mixture is rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
  • 20% is water
  • 2 drops of dishwashing liquid

note:

Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) is a versatile antiseptic, disinfectant, and solvent that kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi on contact. It is primarily used to sanitize skin, disinfect household/medical items (thermometers, scissors), remove sticky residues, and clean electronics due to its quick evaporation.

Key Uses of Rubbing Alcohol
Antiseptic/Skin Care: Used to clean minor cuts and scrapes, or to sanitize hands. It can also act as an astringent to treat acne, though it may dry skin.
Disinfectant: Effective for sterilizing surfaces, such as door handles, countertops, and high-touch electronics like phones or keyboards. A 70% concentration is generally recommended for disinfecting.
Cleaning & Solvent: Removes ink stains, hairspray residue, sticker residue, and degreases surfaces. It can clean makeup brushes and fix broken pressed powder.
Deodorizing: Helps eliminate odors by killing bacteria in shoes or on clothing.
Medical/Household: Used for removing ticks, calming minor itching, and can help alleviate nausea when smelled.

Important Precautions

Surface Damage: It can damage paint, wood, lacquer, and certain plastics.
Safety: Do not drink it, as it causes poisoning. Avoid using it on deep, serious wounds or overusing it on skin to avoid irritation.

The most commonly used strengths are 70% (better for disinfection) and 90% (better for cleaning/fast evaporation).

  1. Be aware that some formulations of rubbing alcohol/surgical spirit contain a small amount of castor oil. You may not want that on optical glass. Check the label carefully.
