Svalbard and Cats

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, formerly known as Spitsbergen. The largest island is, indeed, called Spitsbergen. Cats are prohibited in order to keep the ecological balance.

There is also a Russo-Ukranian mining community in Barentsburg, where cats are prohibited in order to keep the ecological balance. Kesha, a large ginger tom (now sadly departed), was brought there by the Russians and is now officially registered as an arctic fox. So the only cat in Barentsburg was registered as a fox!
