Denmark and Sweden share a postal service, Postnord. Ownership is Sweden 60 percent and the Ministry of Transport of Denmark 40 percent. Volumes of physical mail have dropped dramatically, while parcel post has shot up.
At the end of 2025, Denmark will stop delivering letters. All postboxes will be removed in 2026.
Here in Stockholm, we have postal deliveries every second day. I hardly get anything – maybe new credit cards or a brochure now and then. I mostly receive updates via email, and I have a digital mailbox (Kivra) for official post. For now, Sweden will continue with letter deliveries.
The difference between Sweden and Denmark is that Denmark requires its citizens to have a digital mailbox. In 2024, Denmark repealed the obligation of the public service to deliver letters. In Sweden, Postnord is still tasked with providing a universal postal service, but the company wants changed conditions for this as a result of the reduced letter volumes.
Growing up I loved receiving cards, letters, supplements. I had a little leather writing case for my stamps, writing paper, pens and envelopes. I sometimes send cards to friends and family but it happens less and less. The postal service is not that reliable and it is much quicker and easier to send an email. Still, I am rather sad that letters will end (or perhaps have to be delivered as parcels!)

it may be coming in Australia for similar reasons —
Postal prices here have increased dramatically over the past couple of years. I love sending and receiving physical letters and cards.
I had read about this and I thought it was a joke… I have a penpal in the US and we write every week. We used to exchange parcels but the German postal office has become abysmal… We have to pay so much just to receive gifts for birthdays and Christmas. If letters go, I’m going to be really annoyed…
That’s so sad. I still send and receive lots of letters and cards. I can’t imagine not having a postal service. I don’t like the idea of being forced to have a digital anything!
How will people receive printed magazines from outside of Denmark? Will post-office boxes still exist.
We don’t get a lot of mail and mail tends to be delivered Monday-Saturday, although I think they are trying to change that to Monday-Friday.
Maybe they will be classed as parcels? Or a private company may take up that task, given that it is not a huge mission anymore. I think I read 8000 posties will lose their jobs.
