Wandering around town

I’ve had days I wanted to do that. Sometimes after a bad haircut!

I saw these really cute cups, bowls, and place card holders at Urban Outfitters

Flying Tiger had these cute ladybug/ladybird design on some of their spring lines.

I rather liked this cheerful egg painting. It would look lovely in our kitchen!

I am always struck by how much English Swedes use in the commercial sector. Some international chains have global campaigns, but a lot English appears in local chains as well.

  1. How so you feel about Swedish shops using English?
France started using a lot of English words or sentences in ads and shops about twenty-five years ago. The government put a stop to it and when some international brands still do (no more than a sentence is allowed) then they have to translate it.
Even radios cannot play more than four songs in the English language in a row or five every hour.
I am very happy about that law as it helped to protect language from slowly being anglicised. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against English, being half English myself and being an English teacher and translator/interpret but I think that countries have to protect their language and master it.

    1. As someone who loves the beauty of language, it makes me feel sad to see English slowly taking over. Swedish is such a small language and so few people speak it that I believe it should be protected in the same way as Irish Gaelic, which was brought back from the brink of extinction in Ireland. Advertising campaigns in English, staff in shops that only speak English, and English terms being used in Swedish means that a tiny language may die out over time. English has killed so many languages as it is. Swedish is not an official language in Sweden, just a national one.

      1. I do understand how you feel. I would feel sad too if French was being taken over by English. I am surprised that your government didn’t vote laws as the French government did to prevent the spreading of English and protect the national language.
