African bead art

Unemployment is high in South Africa (98% in small towns), and the government – unfortunately – does not help anyone much, except themselves. So people often make items to sell – from bottle caps (pot stands, handbags), plastic bags (crocheted hats and handbags), coffee capsules (see below), and beads and wire.

We bought a little beaded wire Christmas tree for $4 (though we gave him more). Isn’t it gorgeous?

I wish we had more space because I LOVED these!

And how about this one?

You also find woven plastic wire.

…and belts from car tyres

and the most beautiful art

  1. Janet thank you for the pics, these are all amazing and just go to show what you can do with an active imagination, artistic ability and a little ingenuity. The Christmas tree is amazing and most of the other bits too.
