Today a reader asked me about my new layout so I thought I would pop my reply up in a post in case anyone else is curious.
I used to use the (free) Ocean Mist theme which looked something like this:
But after two years I decided I was due for a change. The main thing I wanted was a magazine layout which allowed people to scan several articles at the same time, instead of having to scroll through the entire post to find the next one. I also wanted the interface to be similar to the old one so readers knew where to find things.
So I opted for the Opti theme, which looks like this before customisation:
and I customised it around the green of the header photograph.
It is a pay theme ($79) but after 1010 posts over several years I figured I should splurge!

I am not very good with design in that I tend to always (with everything I do) go over the top. So I was a bit concerned that what I was pleased with would be lurid and hard to read. It is nice to know people like it, but am always keen for suggestions to improve it.
