Briton Rivière (1840 – 1920)

Briton Rivière (1840-1920) was the British artist who created the two paintings I featured recently.

I am not sure how many Daniel/lion paintings he did, but you can find prints quite easily on Etsy and see the original in the museum below. The works are magnificent.

The Book of Daniel (chapter 6) in the Old Testament narrates that Daniel is an advisor to a royal Lord. The lord is persuaded by evil advisors to demand that he be the only one prayed to, not God. Daniel continues to pray to God. The lord casts Daniel into the lions’ den, but because God knew him to be blameless, the lions mouths were kept shut and they did not eat him. The king comes to his senses, and has his treacherous advisors thrown in instead, with their entire families, who are subsequently devoured.

I remember learning about it at Sunday school (I was always interested in the parts with animals) but probably a child-friendly version. If you read the Old Testament when you are older, you realise that it is incredibly violent. I studied it when I was in my last two years of school (Biblical Studies was one of my subjects) and was horrified.
