Ian Rankin’s Rebus crime novels

I enjoy the John Rebus series by Ian Rankin. Rebus reminds me of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, but the settings are grittier and grimier, and the character of Rebus a little more haunted and harrowed. Not as damaged as Jo Nesbø Harry Hole, however.

I found these in a charity shop a while back and am working through them. I left behind the ones I had already read for someone else to rehome.

They are a harder read than Connelly because the language is a little more convoluted, but they are so enjoyable.

I was rather disappointed that a proofread, edited and reprinted book should incorrectly use appraise rather than apprise. Maybe I have been working with language for too long…

…though interestingly, Rankin’s books often feature Filofaxes!
