Causes of death in London, 1632 – wow!

Rising of the Lights referred to diseases of the lungs or respiratory system, possibly conditions like croup or bronchitis. “Lights” was an old term for lungs, and “rising” suggested inflammation or obstruction causing difficulty breathing.

Tissick was an old term for a chronic cough, often associated with tuberculosis (consumption). It indicated a lingering illness of the chest with labored breathing and wheezing.

King’s Evil was a common name for scrofula, a form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes in the neck. It was called the “King’s Evil” because it was believed that the touch of a monarch could cure it.
